Rated officially as 'exceptional', he was the only survivor out of the 20 pilots he trained with. A poignant reminder of the dangers faced by air crew against weather and a determined enemy. He saw active service in Malta, Gibraltar, Cairo and Scotland. At the end of the war, after some very close calls, he concluded that had he been a cat, he would have used 8 of his 9 lives.
